Rethinking Stereotypes about Filipino Women
Whether you are still planning to meet Filipino women or have been on the Philippine dating scene for a while, you may have already made up your perceptions of Filipino ladies.
Stereotypes are there for a reason. For better or worse, they exist because much of our behavior reinforces them. And it’s not always a bad thing. Just be careful about making up your mind too soon; you might end up missing out on possible long term relationships.
If a certain stereotype fits what you are looking for, then great. Determining which Filipino women characteristics fit your bill is important. It can help you weed out the bad apples as well.
You don’t want to spend time dating the wrong woman over and over. Just remember to be open-minded, and you may just be pleasantly surprised!
Here are a few stereotypes about the women in the Philippines and why rethinking them can open you up to more potential partners:
- Filipinas don’t speak English well.
- Filipinas are too conservative.
- Filipinas are only after your money.
- Filipinas are exotic looking.
This is tricky because you probably heard that Filipinos speak English quite well. In reality, both of these are true. It used to be that only the educated men and women in the Philippines spoke decent and comprehensible English, while the rest of the population were inarticulate.
This trend is quickly reversing. According to Education First, the Philippines ranked 20 in its 2019 global ranking, scoring high in English proficiency.
The increase of call centers and BPOs around the country has contributed to the rise of proficient Filipino english speakers.
Not only do Filipinos learn fast, they have the ability to adopt American accents, making them the ideal choice for call center agents and ESL teachers.
Understandably you will meet Filipinas who speak less than proficient English. That’s totally fine. Whatever language barrier these women have, they more than make up with it with genuine effort, enthusiasm, and overall feminine charm.
It’s hard to deny the heavy conservatism and traditionalism among Filipinos. Not only is it a reflection of the family-oriented Catholic society, it is an almost hereditary personality trait passed on from generation to generation.
Don’t let this deter you though. While many things are considered taboo like internet dating or showing affection in public, it doesn’t mean there aren’t women up for being overtly passionate in the love game.
Filipino men and women are very connected to their families. Understandably they don't want to look bad in front of their family, relatives, or friends.
While many Filipinos get overly conscious about how society views them, many more are beyond that.
You would be surprised that many Filipino women are up for anything. Many of them love to party, have a drink, and meet new faces. And they are absolutely fun to be around.
Many Filipina singles love dating foreigners. If they happen to be dating one, they sure are proud of it and don’t hesitate to flaunt it. It’s not a trophy mentality; it’s just something they truly feel happy about.
The key to discovering these openly passionate women is by treating them respectfully and honestly. In a lot of these instances, it’s the women who take the lead!
The reality is that this isn’t a Filipino-exclusive stereotype. Many women all around the globe marry to improve their and their family’s financial situation.
The Philippines isn’t the most well-off country, and many families do live below the poverty line. Yes, gold diggers do exist.
Things however are improving for the better. More women are educated now than ever before. Many of them are proving to be more self-reliant given the countries increasing employment opportunities.
Finding potential partners who won’t give you a run for your money hasn’t been easier.
There is also an increasing shift in Filipino women’s attitude towards money.
According to a few foreign men who have dated or married Filipinas, their partners never brought up money issues or have asked for money.
In fact, as some have testified, their partners instead would buy them gifts, clothes, or treat them to dates despite being in lesser financial situations.
Finding love, a genuine relationship in which she loves you for who you are and not for your money, will take effort and some luck no matter which country you are in. It does not make or break a relationship, but if that is what you are looking for, then there is definitely someone out there for you.
Beautiful Filipino women come in all shapes and sizes. They are as diverse as the number of islands on the archipelago!
The funny thing is what Filipino men find beautiful often differs from what foreign men find beautiful.
In general, Filipino men’s preferences for women are reflected as seen in the media: fair-skinned, tall, mestiza (mixed) looking. It’s no wonder many famous Filipino women celebrities are mixed. The Philippines’ last two Miss Universe winners, Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray, both have white fathers.
Filipino beauty standards have long been connected to Western beauty standards. It is the reason why skin whitening and sometimes plastic surgery are popular.
Not only are Filipino men attracted to women with caucasian qualities; they have a great attraction to Asian (Chinese) looking women as well.
There are many Filipinos of Chinese heritage and they are well-represented in film and media as well.
With the rise of South Korean and Japanese pop culture, many Asian women have come to symbolize beauty among the Filipino populace.
Foreign men tend to have a different view on things, preferring the more exotic and native Filipino look. They find these women to be naturally elegant and feminine and appreciate the tanned complexion of their skin.
The truth is there is no typical Filipino beauty. If you have a type, chances are there is a Filipino lady just for you.
Beyond Stereotypes
If you have ever asked your friends before about their experience traveling to another country, chances are their impressions are a mix of good and bad.
“Oh, the locals are so friendly!”
“Gosh, they were so rude!”
“Man, the women were so beautiful!”
When we hear bad things about a country or people, we get hesitant about pushing through.
Yes, stereotypes exist because there are people like that.
Filipino ladies may come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, but for what it’s worth they are some of the most beautiful women inside and out!
Filipino women have come a long way to transcend stereotypes. By keeping an open mind, you are giving yourself a chance to find a beautiful, unique Filipino woman just for you!
